113. “St. Catharines Standard - Obituary.”
One of Niagara's oldest citizens in the person of James Tewsley passed away on Thursday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Benjamin Carroll.
The deceased had reached his 75th year and up to his death was a familiar figure in the village. He was born in England in 1833 and when but 5 years of age came to Canada and settled with his parents at St. David's, Thorold and St. Catharine's and was well known throughout the entire district.
He was stricken with a paralytic stroke on Thursday shortly after 12 o'clock noon, and departed this life at 4:00 o'clock in the afternoon.
He leaves to mourn him one brother George of Dunnville, and 2 sisters - Lydia of South Bend, Indiana and Caroline, of Peterborough. He is survived by one son William of St. Catharine's and two daughters - Mrs. Fell Cuthbert of Thorold and Mrs Benjamin Carroll at whose home he had resided for the last 4 years, his wife having died in May 1907.
He was a member of the Home Circle and attended the Methodist Church.
A large circle of friends in Merritton, Thorold and St. Catharine's will regret to learn of his death, which removes from active life one of best known and oldest citizens of the Niagara District.
The funeral will be held on Sunday, January 19th.
